Nearly a fortnight ago, a delighted Doctor opened a rather promising prismic package.

Two skips and a hop later, it was Michaelmas.

The frame is glorious and praiseworthy, but the note

inside was even more precious.

Said frame was soon joined by a ravishing red cap, a clip,

and chocolate of great rapport.

A scarf wrapped together each gift in love.

I laughed, and we had a brief talk about the beautiful ode to eternity that is that song. Then, Nathan told me the best thing I have heard all week. He said, and I quote: "My aunt wrote that song. I just found out about that a few years ago. I said, 'Aunt Jill, did you really write the words to that song?' To which she replied, 'Yep. I'm the children's children's children.'"

(If you thought I was going to go somewhere else with this... well... that wouldn't exactly be a confession now, would it?)

The season of November 15 through December 31 is brim full of anticipation, excitement, good will, and the warming of hearts. In fact, I think that the holiday season, like love, makes people view the world in a charming bokeh effect. And I love bokeh. Also, love love (at least in theory).

In all gravity, my good men, this is a wondrous time of year and I pray that it holds all of the best for my profoundly favorite gentlemen. And perhaps even some happy romantic misadventures.

I would like to propose a 1st Annual Christmas Gift Exchange. Here's how I suggest it be set up:

* One person in the club assigns a name to each member (i.e., Kim, founder of P.Club tells us each which person's name we have)

*Each person buys a quality gift (within $20-25 dollar limit?) for that person

*The gift is sent (or dropped off) to the appropriate person by Dec 12th.

* The recipient of the gift waits until Christmastime to open said gift

*Pictures are posted to document the exchange.

*Love is sent all around. And instead of trying to think of the perfect gift for 4 people, you only have to think of one!

We could send lists of suggestions around. What do you think? This isn't me asking for presents, but I would really like for us to have something fun and secretive-ish to plan for this year....and every year after.

I felt is was high-time I hark back to my roots of posting things which are relevant to no one and no thing. So, with no further adieu... let's begin.

I once encountered the quote "blogging is the new poetry."

This is not true.

It is a good thing you are anonymous, unknown quote contributor on finestquotes.com... (which is the only source I could find for said quote and the accuracy of which's (which's? really?) domain name is something I take an entirely different issue with)
... or else people would kick you everywhere you went for single-handedly knocking down centuries of progress by a notch... or several.

And I don't even like poetry.

Anyhow, today I was reading about Tavi Gevinson, a 13 year old blogger who is apparently so popular that she got invited to attend Fashion Week. Note: I am not even entirely sure what Fashion Week is, but I do know that it is expensive and somewhere I don't belong. Now I find Tavi (and all her fellow Fashion Week enthusiasts) in their exceedingly foreign garb to be kind of cute... similar to how I find the Mexican red knee tarantula kind of cute. Meaning it is theoretically cute because it is brightly-colored and furry, but when I actually encounter one... or a picture of one... I either vomit or wet myself. The same variety of cute applies to fashionista-types. Like so...

Honestly, I think this outfit is an abomination... or, at the very least, those tights are... but... moving on...

The article I was reading mentioned that this young individual had something like 4,000,000 followers. (Wait... people even care about what other people are blogging? What?) And I couldn't help but marvel at how I am just about 0.000025% as cool as this kid. Granted, I don't really feel any jealousy about things like getting invited to Fashion Week because... well... I would probably let loose something like the aforementioned condemnation of those Lisa Frank-skin tights (PETA, get on that. Stat!) and forthwith be drawn and quartered... or whatever it is those types would do to a fashion-pagan such as me.

My clear dearth of cyber-influence did, however, cause me to ponder what makes a popular blogger and, largely, it is a question of breadth vs. depth. If a blogger is focused (preferably obsessively so) on one topic and either well-versed in or holds particularly strong opinions on said topic, then he or she will more or less be successful. That is precisely my trouble: I am an authority on a vast number of topics.

And that, gentlemen, is what is referred to as being a know-it-all.

Which everyone hates.

Those of you familiar with my family---meaning all of you--have met at least my dad or Joel. Thus, you can understand the following circumstance:

Saturday night. 8:30pm. Mom, the girls and I have just finished disk 1 of Bleak House (thank you, LC Public Library!). Dad and Joel get back from home depot. Within five minutes, there's a light on outside in the backyard. Something is happening with boards? Lights? Nails?

That's correct. The new nightly project at the Cummings' house is a tree house! Currently it is a wooden platform that straddles three large trees and is about 8ft above the ground...not quite the carbon copy of the masterful Robinson design of this picture up here.... but I am excited.

Most definitely a fine member of our club who already embodies this wholesome example. Yes, Danforth, you are a beacon to us all.

Check out this profoundly sweet car. I just got it. Granted, I don't see all that blurry stuff when I drive, but the color and composition is about the same.

And it only has some small problems! This morning I couldn't get it to go into Park...so I might get that checked out. There's a problem with the shifting post, I guess... it must've been some elder in Tallahassee. The retired missionary car is serving me well, otherwise.

Basic Etiquette: Gentlemen

In riding horseback, or walking along the street, the lady always has the wall. (Editor’s note: as I understand this "rule", its purpose if there is water along the street, the gentleman will be splashed with the grimy substance, keeping the bulk away from the lady).
Meeting a lady in the street or in the park whom you know only slightly, you may wait for her acknowledging bow – then and only then may you tip your hat to her, which is done using the hand farthest away from her to raise the hat. You do not speak to her – or any other lady – unless she speaks to you first.
If you meet a lady who is a good friend and who signifies that she wishes to talk to you, you turn and walk with her if you wish to converse. It is not "done" to make a lady stand talking in a street.
In going up a flight of stairs, you precede the lady (running, according to one authority); in going down, you follow).
In a carriage, a gentleman takes the seat facing backward. If he is alone in a carriage with a lady, he does not sit next to her, unless his is her husband, brother, father, or son. He alights from the carriage first so he may hand her down. He takes care not to step on her dress.
At a public exhibition or concert, if accompanied by a lady, he goes in first in order to find her a seat. If he enters such an exhibition alone and there are ladies or older gentlemen present, he removes his hat.
A gentleman is always introduced to a lady – never the other way around. It is presumed to be an honor for the gentleman to meet her. Likewise (and it is the more general rule of which this is only a specific example), a social inferior is always introduced to a superior – and only with the latter’s acquiescence. Elizabeth Bennet is horrified when the obtuse Mr. Collins insists on introducing himself to Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. She tries to persuade "him that Mr. Darcy would consider his addressing his addressing him without introduction to as an impertinent freedom, rather than a compliment to his aunt; that it was not in the least necessary that there should be any notice on either side, and that if there were, it must belong to Mr. Darcy, the superior in consequence, to begin the acquaintance."

The Lady - Her rules of conduct are perhaps simpler...

If unmarried and under thirty, she is never to be in the company of a man without chaperone. Except for a walk to church or to park in the early morning, she may not walk alone, but should always be accompanied by another lady, a man, or a servant. An even more restrictive view is that "if she cannot walk with her younger sisters and their governess, or the maid cannot be spared to walk with her, she had better stay at home of confine herself to the square garden.
Under no circumstances may a lady call on a gentleman alone unless she is consulting that gentleman on a professional or business matter.
A lady does not wear pearls or diamonds in the morning.
A lady never dances more than three dances with the same partner.
A lady should never "cut" someone, that is to say, fail to acknowledge their presence after encountering them socially, unless it is absolutely necessary. By the same token, only a lady is ever truly justified in cutting someone: "a cut is only excusable when men persist in bowing whose acquaintance a lady does not wish to keep up." Upon approach of the offender, a simple stare of iciness should suffice; followed, if necessary, by a "cold bow", which discourages familiarity without offending the insult, "and departure forthwith". To remark, "Sir, I have not the honor of your acquaintance", is a very extreme measure and is a weapon that should be deployed only as a last resort.

It is also improper to... uh... fraternize... with a squid-man.
